Heat stress in combination with Fertility

If it is very hot, this can have a negative effect on the fertility of cows.

Cows do not show the heat as well, have an abortion (gestation longer than 42 days) or the pregnancy ends (gestation shorter than 42 days) (Veehouder Veearts, 2016). The birth weight of an unborn calf that has experienced heat stress in the womb is often lighter than the unborn calf that has not experienced heat stress in the womb. For example, there is a difference of 6 kilograms at birth, which increases to a difference of 13 kilograms at the time of weaning, in favor of the calf that has not experienced heat stress in the womb (Ward Arts, Agrifirm Feed, 2013).

Factors that influence fertility are not limited to cows. The bull also suffers from the heat, because the bull produces worse sperm cells during (and after a heat stress period). As a result, the fertilization percentage in the cow decreases (Boerenbond, 2018).
